For a Runner, Alcohol
Keeps Drifting Away
I said we would meet again in winter, but I am no longer sure. Alcohol keeps moving farther away as the miles grow. I will give the whisky away and drink the beer slowly if I want it in winter.

There is beer I bought for the hottest days of summer and a shelf of bottles from a brief period when I was fascinated by whisky. Now that I am scrambling toward 200 km in one month, they feel like rather extravagant guests. Even after dividing up my time and energy, there is none left to spare for them.
Today I followed a 10 km morning run with another 5.57 km in the afternoon: two outings and 15.57 km altogether. September mileage rose to 134.84 km. Even if 200 km is difficult, rushing the distance and getting injured would solve nothing. I will run slowly, listen to the body, and keep strengthening the legs. If they feel good tomorrow, I plan to run beneath the Chuseok full moon.

I said we would meet again in winter, but I am no longer sure that we will. For a runner, alcohol keeps drifting away. I will give the whisky to people around me and drink the beer little by little if I want it in winter. This is no grand declaration of abstinence. It is simply a change in priorities: my calendar and running path are busier than the refrigerator.
