Run the Namsan Hills

At 10 p.m. on Sunday, I headed to Namsan because I wanted to get stronger. Two out-and-back laps on a roughly 3.2 km section added up to 12.5 km.

TrainingFor strength, run the Namsan hills

One of the enduring truths of marathon training is hill work. Running uphill makes you reset your posture and helps strengthen the glutes and leg muscles that are easier to neglect on flat roads. At 10 p.m. on Sunday, when most people were settling in for the night, I went to Namsan because I wanted to get stronger.

Starting near the first restroom in the direction of the parking area, I ran two out-and-back laps on a section of about 3.2 km each way. The full stretch is closer to 3.4 km one way, or about 6.8 km out and back. Next time, I hope to try three laps. Near the end, the front and middle of my right sole felt slightly uncomfortable on landing. It was not severe pain, but I decided to rest the next day and watch how it changed.

For navigation, use Namsan Park Hoehyeon Jarak Public Parking Lot. I visited late in the evening because the path is busy with walkers during the day, and most people I met on the road were runners. At night, take care around unlit sections and pedestrians.
